Factors influencing cardiac hypertrophy in hypertensive patients.

1. Seventeen male patients with essential hypertension were studied after 4 weeks of placebo and after 8 weeks of beta-adrenoceptor-blockade therapy with atenolol (100 mg/kg). 2. The influence of the following factors on left ventricular wall thickness and left ventricular mass index as determined by echocardiography was examined: patient's age, duration of hypertension, arterial pressure, bloo...

Transcription Factors in Heart: Promising Therapeutic Targets in Cardiac Hypertrophy

Regulation of gene expression is central to cell growth, differentiation and diseases. Context specific and signal dependent regulation of gene expression is achieved to a large part by transcription factors. Cardiac transcription factors regulate heart development and are also involved in stress regulation of the adult heart, which may lead to cardiac hypertrophy. Hypertrophy of cardiac myocyt...

Carvacrol Ameliorates Pathological Cardiac Hypertrophy in Both In-vivo and In-vitro Models

Hypertension-induced left ventricular hypertrophy is the most important risk factor for heart failure. This study aimed at investigating the effects of monoterpenoid phenol, carvacrol, on myocardial hypertrophy using both in-vivo and in-vitro models. Male Wistar rats were divided into the control (Ctl), un-treated hypertrophy (H), and carvacrol-treated hypertrophy gro...

CAMTA in Cardiac Hypertrophy

In this issue of Cell, the Calmodulin binding transcription activator 2 (CAMTA2), is shown by Song et al. (2006) to be an indispensable transcription coactivator for cardiac hypertrophy. CAMTA2 is activated by the dissociation of class II histone deacetylase 5 and promotes transcription of genes involved in cardiac hypertrophy through its interaction with Nkx2-5.
